MOLYKOTE® 41 Extreme High Temp. Bearing Grease

Silicone-based NLGI Grade 2 bearing grease with carbon black thickener. Rated -18°C to 290°C. Nonmelting, oxidation-resistant formulation for bearings in kilns, steam turbines, power insulators, and other extreme-heat industrial applications.

Product Overview

MOLYKOTE® 41 Extreme High Temperature Bearing Grease is an NLGI Grade 2 silicone-based grease with a carbon black thickener system and corrosion inhibitors, rated for continuous service from -18°C to 290°C (-4°F to 554°F). Its silicone base oil resists oxidative breakdown at sustained elevated temperatures, and the carbon black thickener does not soften, melt, or migrate under heat loads that cause conventional lithium and polyurea greases to fail. For maintenance teams managing equipment in kilns, conveyor ovens, steam turbines, and power distribution infrastructure, MOLYKOTE® 41 delivers reliable bearing lubrication without the premature relubrication cycles and unplanned downtime caused by grease degradation.

Unlike standard silicone greases, MOLYKOTE® 41 maintains structural integrity at the upper end of its service range rather than softening and migrating out of bearing cavities. Corrosion inhibitors protect bearing surfaces against moisture, acidic atmospheres, and outdoor environmental exposure, making it suitable for applications in power generation auxiliary systems, substation switchgear mechanisms, and process equipment operating in corrosive or high-humidity environments. The formulation is compatible with most plastics and elastomers, reducing compatibility risk in assemblies that combine metallic and non-metallic components.

MOLYKOTE® 41 is applicable to rolling-element and plain bearings operating at moderate speeds and loads in high-temperature service. It is not recommended for heavily loaded ferrous bearing combinations with significant sliding friction, or for painted surfaces. For applications requiring extreme pressure performance under heavy loads, evaluate MOLYKOTE® 41 against grade alternatives to confirm fit to your operating conditions.

Applications

  • Rolling-element bearings in conveyor ovens, drying lines, and continuous heat-processing equipment
  • Wheel bearings and pivot assemblies on kiln dollies, oven carts, and furnace transport systems
  • Governor linkages and regulator controls in steam turbines
  • Bearings and rotating components in molten salt pump systems
  • Ball-and-socket connections on high-voltage power line insulators
  • Knife-type electric power disconnect switches and switchgear mechanism bearings
  • Damper actuator and fan bearing points in high-temperature industrial HVAC systems
  • Bearing applications in oil and gas process equipment exposed to elevated temperatures and corrosive atmospheres

Features & Benefits

  • Nonmelting Thermal Stability from -18°C to 290°C: Carbon black thickener system resists softening and migration at sustained high temperatures where lithium and polyurea greases lose consistency and vacate bearing cavities, maintaining lubrication film across the full rated service range.
  • Oxidative Stability in Continuous High-Temperature Service: Silicone base oil resists oxidative degradation at elevated temperatures, reducing carbonization and sludge formation that accelerate wear and shorten relubrication intervals in conventional petroleum or synthetic greases.
  • Water Wash-Off Resistance: Maintains grease structure and bearing film integrity in humid, wet, or outdoor-exposed environments, protecting against lubricant loss and bearing corrosion in power distribution infrastructure and industrial outdoor service.
  • Corrosion Protection in Aggressive Environments: Corrosion inhibitor package protects bearing surfaces against moisture, acidic gases, and chemical atmospheres common in power generation balance-of-plant, oil and gas process areas, and outdoor T&D equipment.
  • Plastic and Elastomer Compatibility: Compatible with most engineering plastics and elastomers, enabling use in mixed-material bearing assemblies and mechanisms without risk of chemical attack, swelling, or dimensional change to non-metallic components.
  • Broad Application Method Compatibility: Applies via grease gun, brush, spatula, or automated lubrication systems without modification to existing maintenance workflows.

Problems Solved

  • Grease Meltout and Bearing Starvation at Extreme Temperatures: Eliminates the lubricant loss that occurs when conventional greases soften and migrate out of bearing cavities above their dropping point, preventing the metal-to-metal contact, accelerated wear, and seizure that follow.
  • Base Oil Oxidation and Carbonization in Hot Service: Prevents the oxidative breakdown of petroleum and synthetic ester base oils at sustained temperatures above 150°C, eliminating the hard carbon deposits and sludge formation that score bearing surfaces and increase friction torque.
  • Premature Relubrication Cycles Driven by Thermal Degradation: Extends relubrication intervals in high-temperature applications by maintaining lubricant integrity over longer service periods, reducing the maintenance labor and unplanned equipment shutdowns associated with frequent greasing of kilns, ovens, and turbine auxiliaries.
  • Corrosion and Pitting on Bearing Surfaces in Harsh Environments: Protects bearing races and rolling elements against rust and corrosion in humid, outdoor, or chemically aggressive service environments, preventing the pitting and surface fatigue that initiate premature bearing failure in power generation and distribution infrastructure.
  • Grease Incompatibility Damage in Mixed-Material Assemblies: Eliminates the cracking, swelling, and degradation of plastic housings, seals, and non-metallic bearing components caused by incompatible petroleum or synthetic ester greases, particularly in switchgear mechanisms and instrumentation with engineered polymer components.
