MOLYKOTE® AS-880N Grease

270

MOLYKOTE® AS-880N is a silicone, silica-thickened brake shim grease applied between pad and shim to cut disc brake squeal. It forms a thin, high-temp film that resists washout and helps control NVH without affecting braking force.

Product Overview

MOLYKOTE® AS-880N is a brake-specific silicone compound designed for the interfaces that actually generate disc brake noise: pad backing plate to shim, shim to caliper, and similar metal/metal or metal/plastic contacts. A silicone oil base, thickened with silica and boosted with solid lubricants, spreads into a very thin layer that stays put under clamp load, vibration, and temperature cycling.

Unlike general-purpose greases, AS-880N is formulated around brake NVH (noise, vibration, harshness). The silicone backbone handles repeated high-energy stops and cold starts, while the solid lubricant package breaks up stick–slip at the pad/shim interface that turns into audible squeal. Low bleed and controlled evaporation at elevated temperature help keep the film in place instead of migrating onto friction surfaces.

Because it is brake-focused and compatible with common pad, shim, and hardware materials, AS-880N gives engineers and technicians a controlled way to manage squeal without changing pad friction materials or relying on improvised lubricants that may not survive real-world service.

Applications

Thin film between disc brake pads and shims (primary use)

Between shims and caliper pistons or abutment hardware where noise originates

Metal/metal and metal/plastic interfaces in the brake stack that contribute to squeal

Service and rebuild operations where technicians are addressing brake noise and require a pad/shim lubricant designed for disc brakes

Features & Benefits

Silicone oil with silica thickener

Forms a stable, high-temperature grease that maintains a thin damping layer between pad, shim, and caliper hardware.

Thin, spreadable NLGI 2 consistency

Easy to apply as a uniform film on shims and backing plates while remaining in place under clamp force and vibration.

NVH-focused solid lubricant package

Targets the stick–slip behavior at pad and shim interfaces that drives brake squeal, helping to quiet noisy systems without altering friction couples.

Wide temperature capability

Performs from winter cold-soak through repeated high-energy stops, supporting global platforms and varied duty cycles.

Low bleed and controlled evaporation

Resists bleed-out and dry-out at elevated brake temperatures, keeping the lubricant where it was applied and extending effectiveness between services.

Compatible with common brake metals and many plastics

Suitable for backing plates, shims, and hardware that incorporate steel, coated metals, and polymer components.

No intentional PTFE or PFAS

Supports programs looking to avoid fluorinated materials while still requiring high-performance brake shim lubrication.

Problems Solved

Persistent disc brake squeal traced to pad/shim or pad/hardware contact surfaces

Short-lived noise fixes when generic greases burn off, wash away, or migrate from the interface

NVH complaints after pad changes where shim design alone does not fully control squeal

Risk of using chassis or caliper greases on pad backs, with unknown impact on noise and durability

Need for a brake-specific NVH grease that fits alongside existing pad and shim designs without changing friction materials
